LEOFF 1 Coalition Member Services
The LEOFF 1 Coalition provides assistance to dues-paying members, as well as their spouses and family members, in navigating benefits and available services.
The Coalition offers support in the following areas:
- Assistance contacting your local LEOFF 1 Disability Board
- Guidance on medical reimbursement claims
- Help with in-home care and 24-hour care requests
- Support with placement in care facilities
- Explanation of Policies and Procedures
- Assistance with denied claims and appeals
- General guidance on LEOFF 1 benefits under Washington State law

Policies and Procedures
LEOFF 1 local Disability Boards may have different Policies and Procedures; however, all are provided for your convenience and are intended to assist members.
These Policies and Procedures are designed to help members:
• Understand their benefits
• Complete claims accurately
• Access medical services to which they are entitled under Washington State law
Contact Before Medical Services
LEOFF 1 members are generally required to contact their local Disability Board prior to:
- Scheduling surgery
- Entering a care facility
- Arranging long-term or 24-hour in-home care
Disability Boards are responsible for approving and paying for:
- Medical treatments and procedures
- Surgeries
- Long-term or skilled nursing care
- In-home care services
Preauthorization is typically required to ensure:
- Medical necessity
- Provider approval
- Coverage of costs
Emergency Situations
In the event of a medical emergency:
- Seek immediate care
- Notify your Disability Board as soon as possible afterward
Emergency care is generally allowed; however, follow-up documentation will be required.
Failure to Notify the Board
If prior approval is not obtained (when not an emergency), you may experience:
- Delayed reimbursement
- Partial payment
- Denial of benefits
